New Zealand lies in the Pacific Ocean, 1600km east of Australia. It comprises two main land masses, the North Island and the South Island plus a number of smaller islands, having a total land area of 266,171 sq kms. (By comparison, Australia is 7,741,000 sq kms!).

The total population is now over 4,300,000, with 76% of this being in the North Island. The five main centres contain 71% of the total population, the largest being Auckland with over 32% of the total population.
